A solid vocabulary is essential for testing, writing, and effective communication in daily life. Through a contextual approach, students learn to articulate unfamiliar words, identify similarities to other words, use them in context, break them down into parts, and look them up. This vocabulary series is built on 3,000 carefully selected words from literature, textbooks, and SAT-prep materials. Each lesson starts with a Word List that includes pronunciations, parts of speech, and concise definitions, using each word in an engaging contextual sentence. Instruction involves reading, writing, and various activities that connect words to their contexts. The curriculum for Book 4 comprises 20 lessons, each featuring 15 words, with a focus on sophisticated vocabulary instruction that prepares students for content area learning. Lessons aim to enhance vocabulary while reinforcing reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Comprehension is supported through five different exercises in each lesson, incorporating reading-first strategies and Greek and Latin roots. This third edition retains the same word lists as the second edition, but updates passages and questions based on The Lexile Framework for Reading. Note that it is not compatible with the second edition's teacher's guides. Book 4 contains words like benefit, prepare, and communicate, across 224 two-tone pages in a softcover format, suitable for Grade 4.
