Four women work at the Danish Centre for Genocide Studies. When two of them start receiving death threats, they suspect they are being stalked by Mirko Zigic, a Bosnian torturer and war criminal. But perhaps he is not the person behind the threats - it could be someone in their very midst. Much of the drama created revolves not only around the scary sense of a killer prowling in the shadows but also around the manipulative games being played between the women in the office as they come under pressure and turn on each other. The irony is that these betrayals and persecutions are taking place amongst professionals who daily analyse cases of appalling cruelty. Now and again, the narrative is broken with extracts from 'articles' dealing with crimes against humanity and the pyschology of evil. Whilst the women apply this to their work with genocide (and the killer), there are parallels to their own behaviour. Když v roce 1988 vyšel tento autorův debut, způsobil senzaci. Byl označen za nejlepší dánskou prvotinu desetiletí a autor za něj sklidil několik literárních cen. Kniha vlastně ani jako debut nepůsobí, naopak vyvolává dojem, že se jedná o dílo autora zralého, zkušeného a sebevědomého. Je svérázně pojatými dějinami dánských snů, tj. (nezřídka idealizovaných) představ, které si Dánové o sobě vytvářeli v posledních zhruba pěti stech letech. Autor se s nimi a především s jejich odvrácenou stranou nemilosrdně vyrovnává v duchu magického realismu a jeho neomezených možností s nadsázkou, s černým humorem a sarkastickým šklebem. Příběh se odehrává během zhruba jednoho měsíce v období před přepadením SSSR Německem a těsně po přepadení. Hlavním hrdinou je vojín Ivan Čonkin ustanovený a posléze zapomenutý jako hlídka porouchaného letadla v obci Rudá. V knize dále vystupuje pestrá galerie obyvatel obce, její funkcionáři, ale i vyšetřovatelé NKVD. Kniha je satirou na soudobý komunistický režim.

Der Werwolf ist ein Roman über die Tyrannei der Liebe über Männer und Frauen und die unendlichen Kräftekämpfe zwischen Gut und Böse in der menschlichen Natur. Seine Hauptfiguren sind von heroischer Größe, aber tief flawed und bewegen sich vor dem Hintergrund der norwegischen Gesellschaft von den Weltkriegen bis in die 1960er Jahre.
