Děj se odehrává v létech napoleonských válek. Tehdy (1814) bylo Norsko součástí Dánského království nedobrovolně vtaženo do válečného konfliktu na straně císaře Napoleona proti Británii. V důsledku válečné strategie kontrolovaly britské lodě dovoz potravin nejen do Francie, ale i jejím spojenců. Pro Nory to bylo o to svízelnější, že tyto válečné útrapy se násobily léty neúrody. Hrdina příběhu, rybář Terje Vigen žijící nedaleko norského městečka Grimstad se vypravil na riskantní plavbu do Dánska, aby přivezl své hladovějící dcerce a ženě obilí.

Drama se odehrává na starém panství nedaleko pobřežního městečka v západním Norsku. Bývalý farář Johanes Rosmer, se chystá udělat velký životní krok a rozejít se jednou provždy s konzervativní rodovou tradicí, v níž byl vychován. Pod vlivem emancipované Rebeky Westové se pokouší změnit své společensko-politické názory a veřejně podpořit liberální síly v zápase za větší občanské svobody. Situaci však zkomplikuje odhalení důvodu sebevraždy Rosmerovy manželky Beaty, což vede k tragickému vyústění. Drama je silně symbolické, zkoumá nemožnost emancipace od hluboko zakořeněné tradice předků a střet moderních, liberálních názorů s bigotním protestantismem. Rosmersholm přináší hluboký pohled na lidskou psychologii a morální dilemata.

Tato povaha často může vést až k osobní tragédii a právě tak to bylo i v případě Peera Gynta, který procestoval celý svět, aby zjistil, že žena, kterou miluje, je v jeho rodné vesnici a čeká na něj, ale to už je pozdě...

Ibsenovo drama odhaluje příběh rodiny Hjalmara Ekdala. V postavách hry se naplňuje osud divoké kachny, kterou postřelil továrník Werle. Stejně jako ona jsou Werlem zasaženi všichni z rodiny, klesli kvůli němu do bahna a chaluh a od té doby vedou nepřirozený, umělý život plný falešných iluzí a přetvářky. John Gabriel Borkman je Ibsenovo pozdní psychologické komorní drama, které se ve všech částech soustředí na Borkmanův osud. Postavy jsou hluboce psychologicky propracovány. Je to hra především o životních iluzích. Stárnoucí postavy obětovaly celý svůj život vyšším cílům (kariéra, výchova), ale na sklonku života se ukazuje, že z této snahy něco dokázat zbyly jen trosky. Život v iluzi a sebeklamu je typický pro titulní postavu John Gabriela, který stále věří, že je jakýmsi spasitelem, který všechny své činy udělal z nejlepších pohnutek a snaží se to dokázat i společnosti. I další charaktery hry lžou samy sobě. S touto generací žijící v neustálé lži kontrastuje generace mladá, která jde za svými sny, nebojí se změny a řídí se především svou svobodnou vůlí, nikoliv konvencemi. Osvald a Regina v sobě nacházejí zalíbení, což paní Alvingovou přinutí zbavit Osvalda ideálů o otci, které v něm sama dopisy živila. [spoiler] Šokovaná Regina odchází „využít svého mládí“ bez ohledu na možné důsledky. Osvald se matce svěří, že je těžce nemocný a pro všechny případy má morfium. Hra končí Osvaldovým záchvatem, po kterém se z něj stane apatická troska, „živá mrtvola“. Jeho matka se odhodlává pomoci Osvaldovi zemřít.

When the physician learns that the famous and financially successful baths in his hometown are contaminated, he insists they be shut down for expensive repairs. For his honesty, he is persecuted, ridiculed, and declared an "enemy of the people" by the townspeople, included some who have been his closest allies. First staged in 1883, An Enemy of the People remains one of the most frequently performed plays by a writer considered by many the "father of modern drama."
