Un roman sans doute "piégé" mais qui n'en constitue pas moins une superbe détente pour le lecteur qui aime l'humour intelligent et le style vif, souple et clair de Jacques Laurent. Le héros est un quadragénaire un peu triste qui a l'art de susciter (ou la délicatesse de subir) les confidences des femmes. On peut dire avec M. Braudeau que l'histoire est fantasque et décousue. Mais il est sans doute plus juste de souligner la composition du roman: "alliage rare de quotidien trivial, de rappels littéraires" (Lesage, A. Dumas, Stendhal, etc.) et "d'ironie bienveillante" (E. Deschodt).
