Kniha se zabývá životními podmínkami obyvatel venkovských periferií v Česku. Klade si zejména otázku, jestli bydlení v periferiích zvyšuje riziko různých forem sociálního znevýhodnění. Zkoumá postavení obyvatel venkovských periferií na trhu práce, jejich příjmy a možnosti zaměstnání. Zabývá se problematikou vzdělání a ptá se, jestli děti vyrůstající v periferiích mají stejné možnosti získání kvalitního vzdělání jako ostatní. Věnuje se každodennímu životu rodin a popisuje, před jakými obtížemi stojí rodiče při výběru školy, zajišťování volnočasových aktivit pro své děti a při snaze skloubit péči o děti a zaměstnání. Sleduje též spokojenost obyvatel venkovských periferií a porovnává ji se spokojeností obyvatel jiných typů území. Ukazuje, že venkovské periferie představují různorodé prostředí, které jeho obyvatelé hodnotí diferencovaně. Často ovšem vnímají, že jim toto prostředí nabízí omezené množství ekonomických a sociálních příležitostí. Kde se v Česku nachází periferní venkov? Jaké těžkosti přináší bydlení v odlehlých venkovských obcích? Proč mají lidé na venkově nižší plat než lidé ve městě? Mají venkovské děti stejné šance na vzdělání jako jejich vrstevníci ve městech? Contemporary British artist Kaye Donachie (b.1970) is best known for her figurative, dream-like portraits of women. Her portraits are not direct representations of her subjects but are "abstract narratives", informed by art and literature by twentieth century women. Often these women have been historically marginalized and include radical writers, activists, poets, and artists. Donachie describes their biographies as "sparse, but that affords a space in which to interpret narratives in my painting and representation." This monograph will bring together a selection of the artist's muted, figurative paintings, exploring the complexities of the muse and female agency in art and literature. It includes an introduction by Simon Martin based on interviews with the artist exploring her engagement with modern art and literature, together with short texts by the artist herself.
