This work explores the interplay between ignorance and surprise, particularly in ecological design projects. It highlights how surprises can illuminate personal ignorance and serve as gateways to new knowledge, especially in scientific research. The author proposes a framework for addressing the unexpected, supported by case studies that illustrate the benefits of embracing surprises and acknowledging ignorance in design and negotiation processes. Drawing from both classical and contemporary sociological perspectives, the author integrates concepts of experimentation within society. The discussion includes various ecological design initiatives, such as the restoration of Lake Michigan's shoreline and the revitalization of brownfields in Germany. These examples demonstrate how recognizing ignorance and surprise can enhance decision-making and lead to effective design strategies. The author argues that ecological design transcends mere master planning or trial and error; it is a coordinated approach that navigates unexpected developments through experimental practices. This perspective encourages a more flexible and adaptive approach to ecological design, emphasizing the value of integrating the unknown into the planning process.
