James Baxter

James K Baxter (1926-1972) is one of the twentieth-century's most remarkable poets, yet he has been too little regarded of outside his native New Zealand. This title gathers some of his most powerful and celebrated poems - political, lyrical and spiritual - with some of his more unexpected writings.

    • The book examines the decline of Western Christianity, including fundamentalism, amidst a rising trend of individuals identifying as spiritual but not religious. It critiques the persistent focus on themes of sin, judgment, and guilt in traditional churches, as well as the superficial feel-good messages from progressive congregations. This analysis highlights the disconnect between contemporary spiritual needs and the messages being preached, suggesting that these outdated approaches contribute to the failure of Western Christianity.

    • The poems in The Tree House are light and easy read-alouds for classrooms or with toddlers-on-the-couch. James K Baxter wrote these poems when he was teaching in Lower Hutt in the 1950s. Successful in the classroom, they have been regularly reprinted in anthologies and collections and remain popular for their accessible rhythms, humour, and quintessentially New Zealand settings. This new gift edition of Baxter's poems is illustrated by Kieran Rynhart in dramatic spreads and beautifully drawn details.
