'Extraordinary' Maaza Mengiste 'Exhilarating' Elif Batuman Selam is the youngest child in a large turbulent family. Even before she is born, her omniscience animates life in a Small Town in 1980s southwestern Ethiopia. Selam and her father listen to the radio in secret as the socialist military junta that recently overthrew the government seizes properties and wages civil war in the North. The Asmelashes, once an enterprising, land-owning family, are ostracized under the new regime. In the Small Town where they live, nosy women convene around coffee ceremonies multiple times a day, the gossip spreading like wildfire. As Selam's mother, the powerful and relentlessly dignified Degitu, grows ill, she embraces a persecuted, Pentecostal God and insists her family convert alongside her. The Asmelashes stand solidly in opposition to the times, and Selam grows up seeking revenge on despotic comrades, neighbourhood bullies, and a ruthless God. Wise beyond her years yet thoroughly naive, she contends with an inner fury, a profound sadness, and a throbbing, unstoppable pursuit of education, freedom, and love. The History of a Difficult Child is about what happens when mother, God, and country are at odds, and how one difficult child finds her voice.

The Assyrian Rock Relief at Yaǧmur in the Tur Abdinpublishes a newly discovered rock relief in the Mazıdağı Plain, at the western end of the Tur Abdin in southeastern Turkey. The preserved remains include an image of an Assyrian king, divine symbols and traces of three panels of cuneiform inscription. Both the image and the panel preserving the most coherent section of legible text can be dated to the time of Tiglath-pileser I. The sequences which can be deciphered relate to the king's penetration into the northwest undertaken in the course of his third campaign against the Nairi lands. The monument is studied in the context of our understanding of the Assyrian expansion in this sector, together with a review of the settlement pattern and political organisation of the Tur Abdin as presented in Assyrian sources.

Is getting "unstuck" feeling hard? That's usually when you are being beckoned to dive deeper for your well-being. Great, dive; Dying To Live: Love Stories will be a scaffold for your brave explorations of those stubborn blockages. Within this memoir, which is somewhat academic, somewhat other-worldly, somewhat painful, somewhat joyous, and angry about the lack of kindness we find in our individual and collective lives, we bear witness to how Jaqueline turns her terrifying demons into valuable warrior minions. Strange as it seems, death, sexual and physical abuse, betrayal, failure, and definitely not fitting in are Jackie's elixirs for real growth... and for sustaining love. Unrelenting fights for her resurrections reinforce your commitment to do the same; live richly, deeply, and true to your Self. Spirit, somehow, seems to talk directly to us through these stories. In Dying To Live: Love Stories, the positive value of suffering is raised to its highest level.

The Indian government, often hailed as the world's largest democracy, asserts that Jammu and Kashmir—its only Muslim-majority state—is "an integral part of India." This region, disputed between India and Pakistan and regarded as the world's most militarized zone, has been under Indian occupation for over seventy-five years. The author interrogates how Kashmir was deemed "integral" to India by examining the decade-long rule (1953-1963) of Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad, the second Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Utilizing a diverse range of bureaucratic documents, propaganda materials, memoirs, and oral interviews in English, Urdu, and Kashmiri, the author explores Bakshi's state-building policies within the framework of India's colonial occupation. The analysis reveals how the Kashmir government aimed to integrate its Muslim population while grappling with inter-religious tension, corruption, and political repression. By challenging the binaries of colonial and postcolonial narratives, the author historicizes India's occupation of Kashmir through emotional integration, development, and empowerment, revealing new hierarchies of power that emerged post-decolonization. This work prompts a reevaluation of triumphalist narratives surrounding India's state formation and the sovereignty claims of the modern nation-state.
USE VERBAL PROMPTS AND PRACTICES TO BECOME THE PERSON YOU WANT TO BE When wellness star Vasavi Kumar suggests “saying it out loud,” she means it literally. Years of journaling in an attempt to learn about herself and meet her goals hadn’t worked, so she decided to talk to herself instead, out loud and with the compassion of a best friend. She used this technique as she journeyed through the challenges of being the daughter of Indian immigrants, a bipolar diagnosis, substance abuse, and recovery. Along the way, Vasavi learned that all the outside expert guidance in the world was no substitute for finding ways of tuning in to her truest inner self, hearing that self’s guidance and wisdom, and then living it with resilience and empathy. In Say It Out Loud, she gives simple verbal prompts to help you voice your deepest desires and reframe negative self-talk so you can heal from past experiences, go after your dreams, and become more intentional, focused, and compassionate.

Vanishing Voices

Vanishing Voices is neither a work of fiction nor a factual account of events in the French artistic world between 1900 and 1960, but instead falls somewhere in between. The 'star' of this story is the prodigiously talented but short-lived French composer Lili Boulanger (1893-1918), who left a small but significant legacy that leaves one to wonder what might have been had she lived even a few more years. Naturally, a story of Lili must include her sister Nadia, arguably the most famous music teacher of all time, as well as the likes of composers and musicians of the era - Debussy, Schmitt, Faure, Ravel, etc. One of the few fictional characters in the tale is the pianist Claude-Francois Beaudoin, but even he is based in fact. His life and career are modeled on that of Paul Wittgenstein, who had lost his right arm in the First World War but carried onward as a left-handed pianist. Claude-Francois serves as the narrator of our tale and, in one of the few departures into pure fiction, the two fall in love, but cannot go far, as Lili's health is too precarious.

Love and Despair explores the multiple and mostly unknown ways progressive and conservative Catholic actors, such as priests, lay activists, journalists, intellectuals, and filmmakers, responded to the significant social and cultural shifts that formed competing notions of modernity in Cold War Mexico. Jaime M. Pensado demonstrates how the Catholic Church as a heterogeneous institution—with key transnational networks in Latin America and Western Europe—was invested in youth activism, state repression, and the counterculture from the postwar period to the more radical Sixties. Similar to their secular counterparts, progressive Catholics often saw themselves as revolutionary actors and nearly always framed their activism as an act of love. When their movements were repressed and their ideas were co-opted, marginalized, and commercialized at the end of the Sixties, the liberating hope of love often turned into a sense of despair.

Are we doomed because of the new digital technologies used in workspaces? Can we avoid measuring in our work? Or are we trapped in a metrification dystopia? Can we create workspaces that can produce what we prefer in order to use our human effort in ways that support nature and our communities? And if yes, what technologies could we use? Here, monetary-theorist Irene Sotiropoulou explores and critiques the information and communication means that were created for capitalist profit-making, showing how we can subvert these and use them for our own non-capitalist purposes. Machines Against Measures shows that in times of capitalist restructuring and multiple social reproduction crises, there open up new possibilities to experiment with quantity, measuring, machines and digital technologies, creating new ways of production and transaction. Within these, are ways of sharing and producing that defy many principles of capitalist relations. Using everyday examples from grassroots activity, this book offers new insights into how to be inventive with what we have at hand and be able to reflect on what technologies we truly need, revealing a grounded and practical vision of technology and work, based on re-defining why and how we measure what we do.

When Justine Chan worked as a park ranger at Zion National Park, she chose to retell a Southern Paiute folktale for her weekly evening program on coyotes. The more that long, hot summer unfolded, the more time she spent alone in the desert, the more she retold the story, the more the story became her life. And in that space, she began to write. Should You Lose All Reason(s) is unafraid of looking hard- back, down, towards, around, forward, at the stories we tell, at herself, at the desert, at the sun, at everything. In conversation with the Southern Paiute folktale, she weaves together a triptych of poems, poems both always on the move and stuck, in exile, in wilderness. Drawing from her experiences serving in AmeriCorps, working as a park ranger, and traveling across the United States, she explores race, loneliness, stories, hauntings, family, landscapes and cityscapes, climate change, survival, music, resilience, the West, and America itself. At times scorching, as times brimming with awe and desire, this debut book of poems resonates with a brilliant new voice.

Golf saved Drew Millard's life, and he wants it to save yours, too. At its core, golf is about developing new skills, honing them through practice, and then contemplating the moment and figuring out which skill fits the circumstances. It's like therapy, just minus the therapist--plus cooler gear and beer. Golf offers camaraderie, time in nature, and a prism through which to view the world. It can genuinely help people live better and more fulfilling lives. Author Drew Millard writes from experience: When a doctor prescribed exercise to help with depression, golf gave him the tools to recenter himself. For him, "sucking at golf was a calling," one that helped him find a sense of balance and rhythm--both on the course and in his own mind. Brimming with personality, accessibility, and a freewheeling spirit, How Golf Can Save Your Life is a celebration of the sport and an examination of all it offers: the pleasures, benefits, personal growth, and friendships, as well as an appreciation for the land, ourselves, and our time. This book will cause you to fall in love with golf, whether for the first time or all over again.

An engrossing look at the rich and turbulent history of coloring cloth Over the centuries our manipulation of the natural world has resulted in an explosion of synthetic dye production and application globally. To gain insight into the history of how folk practices have been lost and technical processes found, anthropologist and textile artist Lauren MacDonald explores a practice that is both ancient and wholly modern: coloring cloth. The pursuit of color has long spurred economic and social contest, and through this deeply researched volume we explore the stories that the materials used to dye cloth tell us about our complex relationship to nature, our troubling ideas about progress and our understanding of power and labor. In Pursuit of Color brings together historic techniques, archive photography, specimens and present-day events to tell the histories of some of the world's most important dyestuffs, complemented with an individual pull-out appendix detailing notes on practical applications and the chemistry behind dyeing processes. Lauren MacDonald (born 1990) is a Canadian-born multidisciplinary artist, designer and founder of the London, UK textiles studio Working Cloth. She has a background in material culture, textile science and fashion.
