Román Synové hromu navazuje na knihu Havran krvavé oko a autor v něm pokračuje ve vyprávění příběhu záhadného chlapce Osrika, který se dostal do světa pohanských Norů a postupně se stal jedním z nich. V předchozím dílu byli Norové zrazeni wesexským ealdormanem Ealdredem. Ten se zmocnil nejen jejich lodi Fjord-Elk, ale také vzácného evangeliáře svatého Jeronýma a Havran, jak zní Osrikovo nové vikinské jméno, se nyní se svými druhy pouští do Ealdredova pronásledování a vyplouvá za ním do země Franků, v níž vládne slavný panovník Charlemagne. Touha po pomstě vede Havrana a jeho norské druhy po řece Sicauně, dnešní Seině, do samého srdce francké křesťanské říše, v níž jsou pohanští Norové považováni za zloduchy, které je třeba vyhladit z povrchu zemského. Jejich cestu do Aix-la-Chapelle, kde Charlemagne sídlí, provázejí četná nebezpečí, z nichž se jim daří unikat. Jejich bohové jsou však vrtkaví. Příběh o chlapci Osrikovi se odehrává na počátku devátého století. Osric žije dva roky u němého tesaře a řezbáře, který se ho ujal, když ho ostatní vesničané chtěli kvůli jeho krvavému oku vyobcovat. Pak ale přistanou u pobřeží dvě vikinské lodě s norskými posádkami a Osric je svědkem toho, jak Norové vesnici vypálí a její muže povraždí. Osrika však ušetří a berou ho na další plavbu s sebou a tak se dostává do světa pohanských Norů a začíná ho přitahovat jejich touha po dobrodružných výpravách. Brzy se osvědčí jako rozený bojovník.
