Jeho vůdci zabloudí, výprava se pohybuje v kruhu, a do toho se ještě přižene tornádo. To vše hravě vyřeší mustanger Maurice, mimořádně schopný, leč zjevně neurozený mladý muž. A máme tu lásku, protože Maurice a Poindexterova dcera se do sebe bláznivě zamilují. To se vůbec nelíbí bratranci Calhounovi, proradnému chlapovi, který začíná kout pikle. Protože je Maurice neurozený, stačí jen málo popíchnout Louisina bratra Henryho, aby si to šel s mustangerem vyřídit. To je vše, co řeknu o ději knihy, kdo chce vědět, jak to bylo dál, musí si román přečíst. Jen doplním, že všechny záhy začne na prérii strašit tajemný přízrak – jezdec bez hlavy.

Jejich lásce však nepřeje plantážníkův synovec, který si chce svoji sestřenici vzít za manželku. Jednoho dne si s lovcem mustangů vyjede na koních plantážníkův syn. Domů se však vrátí jen jeho kůň a mladý plantážník není k nalezení. Zmizí však i lovec mustangů. Místo těchto dvou se však objeví bezhlavý jezdec, který jezdí na svém koni s hlavou v podpaždí. Samozřejmně se vyřeží obě záhady, jak zmizení obou mužů tak i existence bezhlavého jezdce.
