G&T is a pamphlet-length poem, exploring themes of queerness, sexuality and desire. Told through a series of anonymous encounters and relationships with older men, G&T moves between the anonymity of the early hours and the cold light of day. Taking us through drug and alcohol-fuelled nights with strangers, the poem questions the nature of desire, addiction and the sprawling and anonymous world of gay hookup culture, asking what we become when we agree to play roles for the benefit of other people.

Karen O'Brien-Kop's introduction to the Yogsutra restores its status as a significant work of philosophy. Approaching the Yogsutra as living philosophy, it provides a new conception of yoga, recognises the logical structure the Sutras follow and explains the rules and principles that have sustained Patañjali's system of thought for centuries. Moving beyond standard interpretations of Patañjali's text and commentary as an aphoristic practice manual, O'Brien-Kop uses branches of philosophy to read the Yogsutra. Covering reality, self, ethics, language and knowledge, Patañjali's philosophies come to the fore. The book introduces his thoughts on dual and nondual metaphysics, the relationship between mind and body, the qualities of consciousness, the nature of freedom, and how to live ethically. Carefully-selected extracts from the primary text are translated for those unfamiliar with Sanskrit and commentaries run throughout. A glossary provides definitions of key concepts alongside a guide to translation. Accessible and up-to-date, this introduction broadens our understanding of Indian philosophical thought and explains why the Yogasutra deserves to be read alongside The Bhagavad Gita as a classic of world philosophy.

Capturing Light is a must for artists who wish to investigate the golden qualities of light with the emphasis on creating dramatic, imaginative landscapes.Catherine Beale has developed an imaginative light-capturing technique that is both simple and effective. She calls this ‘gravity’ painting. In landscapes, where light is an essential element, this ‘loosen up’ method of flowing watercolor pigments is particularly effective. It can dramatically alter perspectives, veil or highlight details, create mood and atmosphere and imbue pictures with life and vitality. Catherine offers an exciting new technique for artists seeking new challenges and a different way of working. This is a practical guide to an essential subject, written by a contemporary artist who offers new ways of interpreting light in all its different moods. Catherine’s method helps free up painting styles, promote brave color use and produce pictures full of life and dramatic light.

    • In teen films of the 1980s, male characters were notorious for treating consent as irrelevant, with scenes of them spying in girls' locker rooms and tricking girls into sex. Though the film industry has since begun to prioritize consent, ensuring date rape is no longer a joke and girls' desires are not transgressive, Michele Meek argues the genre still has a long way to go. Consent Culture and Teen Films examines several films from the 2000s, including Thirteen, Love and Basketball, Precious, American Pie, and Legally Blonde, to demonstrate how films now routinely illustrate sexual consent and yet still fail to offer characters autonomy over their bodies and sexuality. Affirmative consent ("yes means yes"), Meek reveals, does not protect youth from unwanted, unpleasant, or regrettable sexual encounters. She also highlights ambiguous sexual interactions in teen films--such as girls' failure to obtain consent, queer teens subjected to conversion therapy camps, and youth manipulated into sexual relationships with adults--and seeks to unravel some of consent's intricacies instead of relying on oversimplification. By exposing affirmative consent in teen films as gendered, heteronormative, and cis-centered, Consent Culture and Teen Films proves we must continue building a more inclusive consent framework that normalizes youth sexual desire and agency.

    • Empires were not agents of progress, contrary to their apologists. During the Progressive Era, many across the Pacific sought empowerment through empires. As the United States and Japan aimed to become global powers, numerous Asians and African Americans turned to Japan to confront entrenched racial inequalities. Japan's appeal extended beyond nonwhite populations; American policymakers viewed it as a "progressive" empire similar to their own, fostering a complex relationship across racial lines, despite competition for influence in Asia and disputes over Japanese immigration to the American West. This work explores how American perceptions of Asians evolved on the imperial stage and influenced US foreign and immigration policies. Research in South Korea and the United States reveals how Americans rationalized Japan's colonial rule in Korea by drawing parallels to US governance in Cuba and the Philippines. Initially, the US did not exclude Japanese immigrants as it had with Chinese and Indian immigrants, but perceptions soured due to Japan's harsh treatment of Koreans and Chinese. Even after the 1924 exclusion of Japanese immigrants, the shared respect for "progressive" empires maintained their inter-imperial relationship until World War II, when both nations redefined their histories to portray each other as adversaries.

    • This is a story about English language learners - one in particular - and a reflection on what we, as educators, can do to promote their success. As educators, we're faced every day with the question of how to teach the thousands - many thousands - of children who arrive in our schools as immigrants and refugees, coming with no English, from cultural backgrounds so different from America's, often from impoverished households and often from households where education of the kind we know was completely absent. Our work as educators is to help these children start to climb the wall that stands between their past, wherever and however that was lived, and a future in America, where their education will prepare them to take advantage of the same opportunities everyone else here enjoys. This is not an easy job. But it's one we can't afford to get wrong. And this is not a small corner in our education system today. The number of English language learners in U.S. school systems is large and growing. And the educators involved in teaching this exceptional population include basically everyone, not just those teachers with direct classroom contact. When they're in the building, the entire school is the English language learner's world.

Told through the eyes of witnesses to the fall of Kabul, Walkley award-winning journalist Andrew Quilty's debut book offers a remarkable record of this historic moment. As night fell on 15 August 2021, the Taliban entered Kabul, capital of Afghanistan. After a 20-year conflict with the United States, its Western allies and a proxy Afghan government, the Islamic militant group once aligned with al Qaeda was about to bury yet another foreign foe in the graveyard of empires. And for the US, world superpower, this was yet another foreign disaster. As cities and towns fell to the Taliban in rapid succession, Western troops and embassy staff scrambled to flee a country of which its government had lost control. August in Kabul is the story of how America's longest mission came to an abrupt and humiliating end, told through the eyes of Afghans whose lives have been turned upside down: a young woman who harbours dreams of a university education; a presidential staffer who works desperately to hold things together as the government collapses around him; a prisoner in the notorious Bagram Prison who suddenly finds himself free when prison guards abandon their post. Andrew Quilty was one of only a handful of Western journalists who stayed in Kabul as the city fell. This is his first-hand account of those dramatic final days.

Efe Duyan translates the silent intention behind our instinctive, urgent need of human expression and connection. Duyan's poetry is based on finding unique linguistic forms that fit the respective content of the poem. Through a visible structure, he combines complex metaphors in a rhythmic way, to integrate the daily language by decontextualizing it, and to construct a network of meaning in the background. He is influenced by the art movements of Futurism, Surrealism, conceptual art, and medieval Middle Eastern poetry as well as the modern conception of functionality in architecture. Some poems, built like houses with architectural intention, draw us in through their overall design, clean fine lines breaking at striking angles, guiding our eyes through carefully defined spaces opening to hallways that irresistibly lead us to unexpected enclosures where natural light plays among the walls breathe life into the lives for which they are intended. Where form and function are inseparable, the space is not merely for dwelling. It asks to be experienced. Physically, materially.

    • In the fourth title in the Dissident American Thought Today Series, Chilton Williamson takes on liberalism and reveals the 'faith' of the present Democratic Party as its own cultivated version of absurdity. This 'advanced liberalism' is not the liberalism of Mill, and it certainly no longer is the thinking man's party. If it were once true that conservatism is unimaginative and reactionary, the contrary is the picture of our times. Liberalism now asserts that human nature can and must be perfected, but without reference to nature. The age of the expert has been thrust upon the United States with the urgency of technique to be applied to coerce the vision of a perfect society and perfect human beings. Williamson observes that this liberalism to nevertheless be collapsing, given the obvious opposition to the idea that it is essential to modernity. Liberalism is ironically a kind of unyielding control, "a relativist persuasion that discourages and resists fixed beliefs and certainties and the idea of truth itself." Williamson offers commentary on the present state of liberal ideas and their crimes against better judgment, and vindicates conservatism from being labeled reactionary. Liberalism is exposed as a faith we cannot accept, for it contains nothing to be believed and what it says about the order of things is pure fiction.

This book draws connections between Paulo Freire and some of the most influential critical scholars of the 20th century. Each chapter pairs Freire with one of eleven critical scholars, giving a biographical summary and expanding the shared themes in their work. The critical theorists covered are: Mikhail Bakhtin, Pierre Bourdieu, Enrique Dussel, Frantz Fanon, Michel Foucault, Nancy Fraser, Erich Fromm, Antonio Gramsci, Jürgen Habermas, bell hooks and Iris Young. The book takes up Freire's invitation to use his perspective as a lens into different contexts and offers an expanded look at Freire's contribution to critical theory. While introducing the connections between Freire and other critical scholars the book reveals the importance of Freire's work to political sociology, critical race theory, decolonial theory, feminist theories and critical linguistics.

Perfect for fans of Hannah Morrissey and May Cobb, Vanessa Cuti’s debut is an unsettling thriller that asks just how far you should go to find love. Anxious to get married, thirty-year-old Virginia Carey lands a job as an operator at a police tip line, where she thinks finding a husband will be easy. There’s Charlie Ford, a surprisingly sweet homicide detective, and charming police chief Declan “Deck” Brady. But just as Virginia’s plans begin to fall into place and she can almost picture a ring on her finger, she answers a call from Verona—a mysterious woman who provides a tip about four bodies on a remote local beach. Verona, a sex worker, also gives Virginia details on sordid and raucous parties attended by law enforcement officers, and on the strange fetishes of cops she has been involved with. Then comes an explosive tip: Verona thinks it’s a police officer who is responsible for the killings. But it can’t be true—the cops Virginia works with are marriage material, even if they are a little rough around the edges. While Verona trusts that her tips are being heard because she and Virginia have formed an unusual connection, Virginia realizes that the key to solving the case is ultimately in her hands. The tip line will reveal the truth about those murders. So long as Virginia is willing to hear it.

Long before the world discovered grunge, the Pacific Northwest was already home to a singular music culture. In the late 1950s, locals had codified a distinct offshoot of rockin? R&B, and a surprising number of them would skyrocket to success, including Little Bill & the Bluenotes, the Wailers, Ron Holden, Paul Revere & the Raiders, the Kingsmen, Merrilee Rush, and the Sonics. Peter Blecha tells the story of music in the Pacific Northwest from the 1940s to the 1960s, a golden era that shaped generations of musicians to come. The local R&B scene evolved out of the area?s vibrant jazz scene, and Blecha illuminates the musical continuum between Ray Charles (who cut his first record in Seattle) and Quincy Jones to the rock ?n? rollers who forged the classic jazz-tinged ?Northwest Sound.? Blecha offers highly entertaining firsthand accounts gleaned from hundreds of interviews. DJs built a teen dance circuit that the authorities didn?t like but whose popularity pushed bands to develop crowd-friendly beats. Do-it-yourself enthusiasts launched groundbreaking record companies that scored a surprising number of hit songs. Highlighting key but overlooked figures and offering a fresh look at well-known musicians (such as an obscure young guitarist then known as Jimmy Hendrix), Blecha shows how an isolated region managed to launch influential new sounds upon an unsuspecting world.

Distance gives us a useful perspective. Terry Tatum was a child of the 20th century. His poetry is largely inspired by his own memories of this unique and complicated time in America. Nevertheless, this first anthology of short poems is a timeless encapsulation of themes of loss, conflict, cultural reflection and criticism, environmentalism, childhood idealism and restitution. For the present age, these poems are still relevant. For the fortunate reader, this rich and varied collection of short poems is likely to become iconic and unforgettable.

Under a year later, thanks to a controversial new initiative, she was a detective in the London Metropolitan Police Service. The Met Police's Direct Entry Detective scheme was aimed at turning people with no experience of the police into detectives. When it was launched, to tackle an unprecedented recruitment crisis, over 4,500 people, Jess included, applied. But why, within just a year of qualifying, had the majority of Jess' cohort resigned? No Comment is Jess' candid, eye-opening and often shocking account, exploring the reality of being a detective in the Met and responsible for 'keeping London safe for everyone'.
