Román Nespavost je po tematické stránce nejodvážnějším a po stránce výrazové nejpozoruhodnějším dílem Albertse Belse. Publikace románu byla zakázána, s cenzurními úpravami mohl román vyjít v roce 1986 a v původní podobě až roku 2003. Nespavost připomíná koláž, je tvořena sedmi kapitolami, z nichž každá sestává ze sedmi textových fragmentů. Děj se odehrává ve třech časových rovinách: První rovinu tvoří události jedné noci, které prožije nespavostí sužovaný Eduards Dárziňš; druhou jsou Dárziňšovy vzpomínky na válečné dětství a třetí je boj Lotyšů s Řádem německých rytířů ve 13. století, do nehož je zapojen i Dárziňšův „dvojník“ z minulosti. Mezi těmito časovými rovinami probíhají syžetové i asociativní přesahy, často jen pomocí jediné fráze, čímž román připomíná časový labyrint. V podtextu zaznívá zvláště výmluvná paralela sovětské okupace s podrobou Lotyšska ve 13. století i s okupací nacistickou. V závěru autor objasňuje osudy románu a připojuje negativní posudek sovětské cenzury.
Paris (2013) is William Roberts' most ambitious work to date and can best be described as a contemporary historical novel. It concerns an extended family of Russian emigres struggling to survive in Paris and Berlin during the inter- war years of the last century, and examines the difficulty of holding on to one's identity in exile.
