Dan se narodil a vyrůstal na severovýchodě New Jersey. Po studiu krajinářské architektury na Colorado State University se stal bubeníkem rockabilly/punkové kapely, s níž hrál a žil rok v Londýně. Po ukončení kapely se vydal do Izraele studovat Bibli a zkoumat platnost křesťanství. Po návratu do Santa Cruz se intenzivně zapojil do církevních aktivit a nakonec vystudoval biblické studium na Multnomah Seminary. Po osmi letech služby pastorovi středoškolské mládeže spoluzaložil bohoslužebné setkávání "Graceland" a později se podílel na založení nového sboru Vintage Faith Church, kde nyní působí jako hlavní pastor a dohlíží na misijní činnost. Věnuje se také doktorskému studiu a působí jako externí lektor.
