La narratrice relate ses souvenirs avec son grand-père, amoureux de la nature et de ses peupliers en particulier. Elle évoque les petits moments partagés, la récolte au potager, les promenades au bord du fleuve, le temps qui passe et son papi vieillissant. À la mort de celui-ci, c’est auprès de ses peupliers que la fillette avait trouvé du réconfort. Devenue adulte, elle revient au bord du fleuve, près des peupliers, avec sa fille. Un texte délicat et personnel, de belles illustrations à la gouache.

Jean-Jacques Maniac porte bien son nom puisqu’il voue une véritable passion à la propreté. Il nettoie, range et astique sa maison du sol au grenier ! Il en a même fait son métier : il travaille chez Tumicrob, une usine de produits ménagers. Dans cette vie trop bien rangée, il n’y a pas beaucoup de place pour la fantaisie jusqu’au jour où il rencontre Emilie Saudulit. La jeune femme est un peu négligée, mais tellement pétillante ! Alors, que choisira Jean-Jacques : son ménage chéri ou Emilie ?
