Designing Designing

designing designing is one of the most extraordinary books on design ever written. First published in 1984 and reprinted with this title and cover in 1991, the book was the product of ten years of auto-critique, reflection and experimentation on writing on designing.Offering a savage auto-critique of his own work on “methods”, as well as of the wider methods and ends of advanced industrial societies as a whole, this book challenges the traditional product- and progress- orientated focus on design by insisting that the world now coming into being requires designing to be understood as 'a response to the whole of life.'But designing designin g is also unique in modern design thinking in its exploration of what writing on designing might be. Combining essays, interviews, reflections, performances, plays, poems, chance procedures, photographs, collages and quotes, Jones experiments with both form and content in an attempt to make a book which 'is not simply about designing but is instead itself an instance of the ideas and processes explored within it.'

This book shares the adventures and experiences of a middle-aged private pilot and his friends. These collections of autobiographical memoirs are an open door into a somewhat exclusive but less than perfect fraternity, with thousands of funny and not so funny stories to tell. An uncomplicated first-hand insight for those with only a passing interest in aviation or those who are unable to or are not bold enough to physically enter into the real world of flying. An entertaining read that will satisfy your intrigue, jangle the nerves and make you chuckle in equal quantities.

The story told in this book is so remarkable that some may find it hard to believe that the author has not allowed the passage of years to embellish his memory of the events he describes.

The American Art Tapes:

In 1965, British artist and university lecturer John Jones left the United Kingdom with his wife and daughters to live in the United States for a year and interview some 100 artists. The family moved to Greenwich Village and spent three months on a road trip west to visit artists beyond the immediate reach of New York. Some of the artists, like Yoko Ono and Claes Oldenburg, became Jones's personal friends. Although Jones's daughter Nicolette was young, her memories of New York and their trans-American adventure are vivid. Published here for the first time, this book presents a fascinating selection of Jones's edited conversations with American artists practicing in 1965-66. A foreword by Nicolette contextualizes the setting in which these interviews took place, and a further introduction amalgamated from Jones's lectures in which he drew on these conversations illustrates and explores the range of contrasting ideas behind what became known as pop art. Thanks to his personal interaction with the artists and his knowledge of their work, Jones became the foremost expert in the art of this period in the UK. Amid a unique family story, this is art presented not through the filter of art critics, but from the mouths of the practitioners. Jones's interviews explore a specific place and time: the United States in the 1960s, and are crucial reading for those wishing to understand the decade and the influence of American art and British tradition on each other, as well as anyone curious about the famous figures of the time and the thinking that gave rise to this extraordinarily fertile creative moment

Welsh-language translation of The Journey is Home . In this clear and absorbing memoir John Sam Jones writes of a life lived on the edge. It’s a story of journeys and realisation, of acceptance and joy. From a boyhood on the coast of Wales to a traumatic period as an undergraduate in Aberystwyth, and on to a scholarship at Berkley on the San Francisco Bay as the AIDS epidemic began to take hold, before returning to Liverpool and north Wales to work in chaplaincy, education, and sexual health. A journey of becoming a writer and chronicler of his experiences with award-winning books and the somewhat reluctant compulsion to become a campaigner for LGBT rights in Wales. The adventure of running a guest house in Barmouth where he eventually became Mayor with his husband, a German academic, whom he had married after a long partnership. Just days after European Referendum they put the business on the market... and then moved to Germany. John is still on that journey.
