Tallinn na začátku patnáctého století je městem, které se dramaticky rozrůstá a má ambice stát se významným hanzovním centrem. Apatykář Melchior Wakenstede je ve městě rozporuplnou postavou — někteří ho pro jeho tajuplné znalosti a vědeckou zvídavost respektují, ovšem jiní se jej kvůli mystické auře, která ho obklopuje, obávají. Když na hradě dojde k záhadné vraždě, je Melchior vyzván, aby vedl vyšetřování. Obětí se stal vysoce postavený muž patřící k řádu německých rytířů, kteří ovládají celé Estonsko. Melchior se do vyšetřování ponoří a při snaze přijít záhadě na kloub vyslýchá obyvatele ze všech společenských vrstev města. Záhy se však celá situace zkomplikuje — obětí totiž začne přibývat. Apatykář se tak proti své vůli ocitne v kolotoči lží, intrik a nebezpečných praktik.

Unkonventionelle Mittel wie z.B. ein Schachspiel und unvollständige Gedichtstrophen helfen dem Apotheker zum Ziel zu kommen, er fügt die Bruchstücke des Rätsels zusammen und stellt so den tatsächlichen Täter bloß. Der Mörder scheint gefasst und der Fall abgeschlossen doch am Ende des Romans wartet eine weitere Überraschung...
