Spektakel verantwortungsloser Lust – ebenso aufregend wie bedrohlich: D. A. Bis heute arbeitet sich das Kino an solchen Ängsten ab. Erfolgsfilme wie Ang Lees Brokeback Mountain (2005) oder Luca Guadagninos Call Me by Your Name (2017) machen es kaum besser. Für ihre subversive Ehrlichkeit gefeiert und zu Meisterwerken intensiver Sinnlichkeit verklärt, verkommt der schwule Mainstream-Film trotz seiner scheinbaren Rauheit und Aufrichtigkeit letztlich zum Trostfilm. Schön sind diese Filme gewiss, wie die begeisterten Kritiken festhielten; aber unter der meisterhaften Oberfläche der Bilder vollständig gezähmt durch einen süßlich-abgeschmackten, scheinliberalen Blick, der das homosexuelle Objekt nur unter der Bedingung gutheißt, dass es weder wirklich gezeigt noch angeschaut wird. Wer die Essays von D. A. Miller zur Hand nimmt, wird eine andere Sicht auf den schwulen Film kennenlernen, eine ebenso eindringliche wie subtile Kritik der Darstellung von Homosexualität nicht nur im Kino.
