Neben Gemeinsamkeiten der verschiedenen Traditionen in Aufführungs- und Erzählformen oder der Figurentypologie rückt der nach Ländern gegliederte Band regionale Besonderheiten in den Fokus. In Indien und Thailand etwa ist das Schattentheater Teil von Tempelfesten, in China nimmt es Elemente der Oper auf und im Orient ist es Unterhaltung und Sprachwitz mit satirischem Potenzial. Auch auf den europäischen Kontinent übte das fremdartige Schauspiel eine große Anziehung aus und inspirierte Künstler wie etwa Franz Marc.
