Étienne Balibar (1942), žák Louise Althussera, je jedním z nejvýznamnějších politických myslitelů dneška. Jeho kniha Spinoza a politika (1985) představuje přehledný úvod do filosofie Barucha Spinozy a za své východisko si bere problémy Spinozovy politiky. Balibar se postupně zabývá třemi velkými Spinozovými díly, Teologicko-politickým traktátem, Politickým traktátem a Etikou, a rozebírá řadu jejich klíčových motivů: Spinozovu obhajobu svobody myšlení a demokratického zřízení, jeho teorii státu a práva nebo jeho politickou antropologii. Spolu s tím zasazuje Spinozovy spisy do historického kontextu a zkoumá, jakým způsobem jimi Spinoza vstupoval do dobových politických sporů. Vůdčím tématem celé knihy je problém vztahu mezi filosofií a politikou. Balibar tedy nejen vykládá Spinozovo myšlení, ale uvažuje rovněž o politické úloze filosofa a na Spinozově příkladu prokazuje neoddělitelnost filosofických a politických otázek.

The 12 essays provide an overview of Balibar's work after his collaboration with Althusser. They explain and expand his framework; in particular, by restoring Arabic and Islamic thought to the conversation on the citizen subject. The collection includes two previously untranslated essays by Balibar himself on Carl Schmitt and Thomas Hobbes.
