The Transappalachian Migration and the Making of a White Working Class

The narrative explores the significant migration of eight million whites from the Southern countryside to the industrial Midwest during the early to mid-20th century, known as the "hillbilly highway." This demographic shift, largely overlooked by historians, shaped various aspects of American history and culture, including labor movements and political dynamics. Utilizing diverse sources like government reports and oral histories, the author examines the unique experiences of these communities, highlighting their social advancement and marginalization, and the lasting impact on contemporary American society.

The primary goal behind our ‘BOOK’ was to provide a good overview from day one to the present day. To achieve this, we needed to work chronologically, since this it the only way to give all topics a logical and narrative structure. In describing a period, it is apparent that everything took place and came into being at the same time and apparently at random, and that everything is intertwined. But to create a narrative story, you need to offer all relevant information in the proper order. We were not aware that the process of putting together a book in this manner requires considerable knowledge and is incredibly labour-intensive. The book was to be created in the same fashion as the work itself and the manner in which the company has developed. Nob worked on the book almost continuously for around a year and a half. Without him, it would not have been possible to maintain this working method since we are the only two persons who experienced everything from the very start. Thanks to his knowledge and the fact that we have worked together all these years, we were able to achieve our goal. We presented the book on 23 September at our workshop and, a week later, at the Woonbeurs fair in Amsterdam, where it was offered for sale for the first time.
