Pokračování knihy Andělin popel. Na podzim roku 1949 uskuteční Frank svůj největší sen a z chudého irského Limericku se vrací do Ameriky, kde se před devatenácti lety narodil. Ambiciózní a odhodlaný mladík, toužící po vzdělání a lepším životě, je v New Yorku najat jako pomocná síla na úklid v hotelu. Ze skromného platu vydržuje svou matku i sourozence v Irsku. Na počátku 50. let je povolán do americké armády a poslán do Německa, kde dosáhne hodnosti desátníka a získá vojenské stipendium, které mu umožní po návratu do civilu přihlásit se na univerzitu, i když nemá maturitu. Na studia si vydělává prací v docích, ve skladištích i v kancelářích. V roce 1957 absolvuje úspěšně poslední zkoušky a nastupuje jako učitel angličtiny na střední odbornou a technickou školu na Staten Islandu. Má konečně dostatek finančních prostředků, aby se jeho matka a bratři také mohli vydat přes oceán a rodina byla opět spolu. Autor ve své druhé próze, úspěšně navazující na dílo „Andělin popel“, s určitým nadhledem zachycuje své zážitky a pocity, překonávání předsudků, ztrátu iluzí i setkávání s lidmi různých povah a charakterů.
