Andrew Johnson

    Andrew Johnson byl 17. prezidentem Spojených států, který sloužil v letech 1865 až 1869. Johnson se stal prezidentem po atentátu na prezidenta Abrahama Lincolna, jehož byl viceprezidentem. Jako demokrat, který kandidoval s Lincolnem na lístku Národní unie, se Johnson ujal úřadu na konci občanské války. Nový prezident upřednostňoval rychlou obnovu odtržených států k Unii. Jeho plány neposkytovaly ochranu bývalým otrokům a dostal se do konfliktu s Republikány ovládaným Kongresem, což vyvrcholilo jeho impeachmentem Sněmovnou reprezentantů. Jako první americký prezident, který byl impeachmentován, byl v Senátu zproštěn obžaloby jedním hlasem.
