Velkolepě vylíčený životní příběh Marii Vittorii začíná na počátku dvacátých let dvacátého století v italských horách, kde drsná dřina a neochvějná víra utvářejí celý lidský život. Žena, která se neprovdá, je považována za méněcennou. I Maria se bála, že zůstane starou pannou, ale když už se v pětadvaceti vzdávala všech nadějí, přivedl jí otec z námluv manžela. Po svatbě se přestěhovali do vesnice v podhůří a otevřeli si obchod, Maria pečuje o čtyři děti a má se pořád co otáčet. Drsné dřině je uvyklá od dětství, ale nástup fašismu a války vrhne na její život temný stín. Uživit rodinu je stále těžší, jídla je málo a drsné válečné zimy jsou k nepřečkání.
