Als der junge Maler Rembrandt van Rijn (1606?1669) im Jahr 1631 von Leiden in die florierende Kunst- und Kulturmetropole Amsterdam zog, gelang ihm zügig der Durchbruch. Mit seiner erstaunlich breiten Bildproduktion von Historienbildern, Porträts, Landschaften, Genreszenen und Stillleben erlangte er internationalen Ruhm und fand seinen unverwechselbaren dramatisch erzählenden Stil.In Amsterdam wetteiferte um die Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts eine Vielzahl talentierter Künstler um die Gunst des potenten und kunstliebenden Bürgertums. Die anregende Atmosphäre machte im Dialog mit den Meisterwerken der Zeitgenossen aus einem jungen Maler den weltberühmten Meister: Rembrandt. In wenigen Jahren war er berühmt, bildete selbst aus und betrieb erfolgreich den Handel seiner Gemälde und Druckgrafiken.
