Bitva u Hastingsu byla jednou z rozhodujících bitev středověku. Výsledek střetu, k němuž došlo 14. října roku 1066 mezi vévodou Vilémem Normanským a anglickým králem Haroldem Godwinsonem, nenávratně změnil běh anglických dějin. Vilém za své vítězství vděčil především taktické převaze svého vojska: kromě pěchoty disponoval i jezdectvem, měl ve svých řadách i lučištníky a střelce z kuší, na jejichž vražednou střelbu neměli Angličané jak odpovědět. Haroldova smrt na bojišti urychlila rozpad anglických šiků a Vilém si svým vítězstvím zajistil cestu na anglický trůn.

Tudorovský rytíř byl první obrannou linií, využívanou panovníky od Jindřicha VIII. až po Alžbětu I., a zároveň také posledním představitelem rytířských tradic majících původ v 11. století. Rytířstvo prošlo v období vlády Tudorovců značnými proměnami, co se týče náboru vojáků, vzhledu, a především výcviku a vybavení. Kromě tohoto kniha detailně přibližuje i rytířův vzhled, život na válečné výpravě a zkušenosti z bojů ve Francii, Skotsku a Irsku. Jsou zde také popsány rytířské ideály, jejichž nejnázornějším vyjádřením se stalo ceremoniálně pojaté setkání Jindřicha VIII. s francouzským králem Františkem I. nazývané „bitva chvastounů“, ke kterému došlo v roce 1520 nedaleko Calais.

Vikingskými nájezdy v devátém a desátém století trpěla především Anglie a severozápadní Francie. Snad roku 911, snad někdy kolem tohoto data, byl západofranský král Karel III. Prosťáček nucen dovolit náčelníkovi jménem Rollo, který operoval v údolí Seiny, aby se i se svými lidmi usadil na území, jež dnes tvoří horní či východní Normandii. Bylo ohraničeno řekami Bresle, Epte, Avre a Dives.
