Hugh O'Flaherty se narodil v Irsku ve městě Killarney. Byl nadšeným sportovcem. Závodil jako boxer, házenkář a hráč golfu. Od útlého věku ale věděl, že jeho povoláním je být knězem. Po svém vysvěcení působil nejprve jako apoštolský delegát v Egyptě, Haiti, Santo Domingo a Československu, poté v Římě u Svatého stolce, kde začala jeho nejnáročnější práce. Po kapitulaci Itálie v roce 1943 se Řím dostal pod velení plukovníka Herberta Kapplera z obávaného útvaru SS, který začal s deportacemi italských Židů do Osvětimi. Kappler byl známý nepřítel Židů, který je pronásledoval na každém kroku. Msgre. O'Flaherty, který byl v té době ve Vatikánu hlavou Svatého Officia, se vrhl do činnosti na záchranu Židů a válečných zajatců z nacistické likvidační mašinerie. Zorganizoval sofistikovaný tým, který zahrnoval muže a ženy mnoha národností, náboženství a politických názorů. Kappler se neustále pokoušel O'Flahertyho zavraždit, ale přesto O'Flaherty pokračoval ve svém úsilí. Zachránil spolu se svými spolupracovníky tisíce Židů a válečných zajatců.
