Kniha byla zfilmována pod názvem Maratónec, v hlavní roli Dustin Hoffman. Film proslavil zubařskou scénku: "Je to bezpečné?"

Tento román se řadí ke klasice žánru fantasy, které však nechybí odlehčující nadhled. Goldman, mj. autor scénářů k takovým filmům, jako byly Butch Cassidy a Sundance Kid nebo Všichni prezidentovi muži, o své knize hovoří jako o výtahu „toho lepšího“ z „klasického příběhu skutečné lásky a odvážných dobrodružství od S. Morgensterna“. Goldman podle vlastních slov odstranil rušivý výkladový balast o dějinách a dvorské etiketě, a po destilaci mu zůstalo to, co má podle něj dobrý příběh obsahovat, tedy: „Šerm. Boj. Jeder weiß, dass die Gondolieri von Venedig die größten Sänger der Welt sind – oder etwa nicht? Diese Behauptung mag lächerlich erscheinen, da es keine objektive Methode gibt, um solche Titel zu vergeben. Vergleicht man beispielsweise Baseballspieler, kann man sich endlos streiten, ohne zu einem klaren Ergebnis zu kommen. Wer ist der größte Baseballspieler? Das ist offensichtlich subjektiv. Genauso verhält es sich mit den größten Sängern. Um diese Frage zu klären, habe ich zahlreiche Interviews mit Gesangsexperten, Musikhistorikern und Gondolieri geführt. Dabei habe ich viele Notizen gesammelt, aber ich möchte Ihnen nur zwei Beispiele nennen. Das erste Beispiel ist die W. S. O. (Welt-Stimmen-Olympiade), die bis zu ihrem Ende das bedeutendste musikalische Ereignis war. Die größte W. S. O. fand 1900 statt, als 7.447 Sänger aus 52 Ländern um zwölf Goldmedaillen kämpften. Neun der Goldmedaillen gingen an Gondolieri aus Venedig, was angesichts der damaligen Bevölkerungszahl von nur 90.000 und weniger als 800 ausgebildeten Gondolieri beeindruckend ist. Die restlichen drei Medaillen wurden von den Vizzini-Drillingen gewonnen, die ebenfalls einst Gondolieri waren. Das zweite Beispiel ist Caruso, dessen Bedeutung in der Gesangswelt unbestritten ist. Diese Beispiele belegen eindrucksvoll die außergewöhnliche Gesangskunst der Gondolieri und deren Einfluss auf die Musikgeschichte.
