La magicienne Frieren faisait partie du valeureux groupe d'aventuriers qui a renversé le roi démon et restauré l'harmonie dans le monde au bout d'une quête de dix ans. Tout en admirant une pluie de météores qui ne survient que tous les cinquante ans, l'elfe promet au chevalier humain Himmel, au guerrier nain Eisen et au prêtre Heiter de les retrouver lorsque cet événement céleste se reproduira. Un demi-siècle plus tard, Frieren retourne à la capitale pour la trouver considérablement changée, tandis que ses anciens compagnons, contrairement à elle, sont désormais âgés.
