Psychologická novela amerického realisty 19. století o milostném vztahu stárnoucí ženy k mladému muži, který se snaží jejím prostřednictvím získat některé dokumenty z pozůstalosti slavného básníka. Děj románu se odehrává v Benátkách, v romantickém prostředí starého paláce a při projížďkách gondolou. Z hlediska psychologického jde o vyjádření závažnosti milostného vztahu, který není opětován a kterého nemůže být zneužito.
