Annrith kauerte am Kopfende des Bettes und beobachtete den langsamen, unerbitterlichen Vormarsch der Thath. Ihr Biß war nicht tödlich. Das Gift sollte das Opfer nur bewegungsunfähig machen. Und weil keine Ohnmacht eintrat, konnte das Opfer das entsetzliche Geschehen bei vollem Bewußtsein miterleben. Das Thath suchte sich eine Körperöffnung, drang ein und grub sich von dort mit seinen winzigen, messerscharfen Scheren einen Weg zur Milz. Darin legte es seine Eier ab, aus denen nach kaum drei Stunden die Larven schlüpften. Danach wurde das Opfer von ungefähr einer Million hungriger Mäuler bei lebendigem Leib aufgefressen. Die Tiere waren jetzt nur noch wenige Zentimeter vom Fußende des Bettes entfernt. Sie würden sofort angreifen, sobald sie Menschenfleisch witterten. Wenn es nur einem gelang, sein Gift in ihren Blutstrom zu spritzen, war es aus mit Annrith. Noch vor dem Morgengrauen würden die Thathlarven sie innerlich zerfressen haben.
