Pátý román Helen Oyeyemi je dosavadním vrcholem autorčiny tvorby. Obsahuje vše, co se stalo pro autorku charakteristické a co jí vyneslo zařazení na prestižní seznam nejlepších mladých prozaiků, který zveřejňuje vlivný britský časopis Granta. Práce s pohádkami, mýty, kulturními aluzemi, neustálé prostupování skutečnosti a fikce i náhlé zvraty, to vše najdeme v příběhu dívky jménem Boy. Ta vyrůstá bez matky v rodině krysaře, který na rozdíl od mytického krysaře z německé legendy lidi nepřitahuje, ale odpuzuje. Oyeyemi na tomto trojúhelníkovém půdorysu rozehrává pro ni typickou hru, kdy nic není tím, čím se zdá být a kdy čtenáře čeká na každém rohu překvapení. Dívka jménem Boy je kniha čtivá, vtipná a bohatá nejen na četné aluze.

Děj románu je – jak tomu je u autorčiných próz obvyklé – spletitý, ne-li přímo snový. Když protagonistka knihy Hero Tojosoa zdráhavě přijme pozvání své dávné přítelkyně Sofie a vydá se s ní a dalšími kamarádkami na dámskou jízdu do Prahy, netuší, že se ocitne ve městě, jež sis nic netušícími turisty rádo zahrává, ve městě, které je živoucí bytostí, jež si člověka snadno omotá kolem prstu nebo jej lhostejně odkopne. Kniha, kterou si s sebou Hero přiveze, jako by nějak podivně deformovala její mysl: text knihy se mění v závislosti na tom, kdy ji kdo čte, a odhaluje stále nové, překvapivé příběhy fiktivních Pražanů z minulosti i současnosti, jež se pak zvláštně odrážejí v realitě. Na skupinku kamarádek se navíc nalepí nezvaní společníci; a když se pak nečekaně zjeví žena, na niž by Hero i Sofie nejraději zapomněly, začnou se dít podivuhodné věci. Fantaskní kaleidoskopický román se zamýšlí nad hranicemi mezi iluzí a klamem, skutečností a interpretací, a ukazuje, jak ošidné může být vyprávění o místech, o lidech i o historii. Nakolik je příběh ovlivněn svým čtenářem, a naopak? A je v roztržce mezi přáteli lepší být slunečníkem, nebo sekerou?

Příběh anglické školačky Perdity Lee a její matky Harriet se zprvu zdá být zcela všední, čtenáři však brzy dojde, že se ocitl uprostřed surreálného víru vyprávění, které jej ze současného Londýna unese do (možná imaginární) země Harrietina dětství, v níž její rodina peče neobyčejný perník: „jíst ten perník je jako jíst pomstu (…) jako kdyby si člověk ukusoval přímo z opravdového srdce toho, kdo hrozně ublížil jeho lásce a myslel si, že mu to projde“.
