Autorovo „venkovské retro“ z časů prvních lásek, vinylů a videoher v maringotkách, kdy se všechno zdálo daleko větší, je především subtilním a působivým portrétem dospívání, na jehož prožitku nic nezmění ani válka o Falklandy. Na počátku románu, který se odehrává v době od ledna 1982 do ledna 1983, hrdina zničí nenahraditelné hodinky po dědečkovi, a spouští tím řetězec událostí, v němž autor opět předvede mistrné spředení zápletky. Ze soukromých bitev oněch třinácti měsíců, které jsou pro jeho rodinu tak významné, vychází Jason zralejší i zrazenější. Určitě však s kouzelnými pocity „umělce v jinošském věku“, o jakých psali už James Joyce nebo Alain Fournier, poněvadž David Mitchell ani v „klasičtější“ poloze nezůstal nic dlužen invenci nejtalentovanějšího anglického prozaika své generace.
