The quest for immortality drives Gilgamesh, who, still grieving for Enkidu, faces numerous challenges, including fierce beasts and treacherous landscapes. His journey leads him to Utnapishtim, the sole keeper of the immortality secret, who tests Gilgamesh's resolve. Ultimately, a flower symbolizing eternal youth is lost to Ishtar's vengeance. In the end, Enkidu reveals that true immortality lies in the legacy of one's actions and the love for one's people, emphasizing the enduring impact of deeds over the pursuit of eternal life.

In this second volume in the Gilgamesh trilogy, Enkidu joins Gilgamesh in the quest to slay Humbaba, the monster who has attacked the city and caused great destruction, including the death of the beautiful singer, Shamat. Gilgamesh and Enkidu successfully slay the monster and in so doing, Gilgamesh attracts the attention of the goddess Ishtar. In rejecting her advances, he incurs her revenge and an attack by the Bull of Heaven. Enkidu manages to kill the bull, but is slain by Ishtar, striking at the bond between the two friends. Shattered, Gilgamesh vows he will destroy the last death.

The story explores the transformation of Gilgamesh, a tyrannical ruler of Uruk, whose oppressive reign leads his people to despair. In response to their plight, the Sun God sends Enkidu, a wild man who learns compassion from animals and falls in love with a temple singer. Enkidu's arrival challenges Gilgamesh's cruelty, as their friendship teaches the king valuable lessons about humanity and kindness, ultimately reshaping his character and reign.
