Tento univerzitní román sice z autorova díla poněkud vystupuje, ale přesto je to typický úzkostně existenciální Malamud a také kniha s typickým hlavním hrdinou –⁠ outsiderem Seymourem Levinem. Newyorčan Levin přijíždí na počátku 50. let učit na státní vysokou školu do fiktivního státu Kaskádie na americkém severozápadě (sám Malamud na podobné instituci v Oregonu působil třináct let). Veze si s sebou svobodomyslné názory, ale v konzervativním prostředí, kde jde každému jen o cestu nejmenšího odporu a žádoucí hodnotou je hlavně uniformita, pochopitelně zoufale naráží.... celý text
