Eine tiefe und andauernde Lebenskrise, die den Dichter John Clare (1793–1864) erfasste, mündete 1837 in die Einweisung in eine private Nervenheilanstalt in High Beach, Essex. Vier Jahre später gelang dem damals 48-Jährigen, der heute als bedeutendster Chronist des englischen Landlebens gilt, die Flucht aus der Anstalt und er wanderte in einem schonungslosen Viertagemarsch fast 100 Meilen zurück in sein Heimatdorf in Northamptonshire. Seine legendären Erinnerungen an diese Flucht bilden das Zentrum des vorliegenden Buchs, das, eingerahmt von den beiden bekanntesten Gedichten Clares, auch autobiografische Fragmente umfasst und damit einen der großen Naturdichter englischer Sprache porträtiert. Ausgewählt und erstmals übersetzt von Esther Kinsky, stellen die hier versammelten Texte in ihrer existenziellen Dringlichkeit und hohen Verdichtung die Entdeckung einer im Deutschen bislang unbekannten Größe der europäischen Literaturen dar.
