William Carey byl anglický protestantský misionář a baptistický kazatel, známý jako „otec moderního misijního hnutí“. Již od počátku své dráhy se věnoval překladům Bible, a to do bengálštiny, sanskrtu a mnoha dalších jazyků a dialektů. Jeho odkaz žije nejen v teologických studiích, ale i v několika univerzitách pojmenovaných na jeho počest. Careyho práce položila základy pro rozsáhlé misijní aktivity po celém světě.
