Thomas Graham Jackson

Jamese, ukazují Jacksonovu zálibu v tajemných a strašidelných tématech.

The history of Romanesque architecture in Germany begins with Charlemagne, as no structures predate his era except remnants from the ancient Romans. Charlemagne was a significant builder, as noted by Eginhardt, his secretary, who mentioned the repair of churches but lacked detailed accounts. Two notable constructions from this period include the basilica of the most holy mother of God at Aquisgranum and a wooden bridge over the Rhine at Mainz. The basilica, intended as Charlemagne's tomb, showcased remarkable craftsmanship and was adorned with gold, silver, and bronze elements. Eginhardt described its grandeur as a reflection of Charlemagne's Christian devotion, emphasizing his regular attendance at services. The basilica at Aix-la-Chapelle stands out as an exotic structure in 8th-century Austrasia, drawing inspiration from the church at Ravenna. Charlemagne imported columns and marbles from Ravenna and Rome for its construction, possibly dismantling Theodoric's palace in the process. The architectural similarities to S. Vitale are evident, yet the builders demonstrated originality, adapting their model rather than merely replicating it. The design features a dome over an octagon, a two-storey aisle, and staircases, highlighting the innovative spirit of the architects involved.
