Ein junger Londoner Maler wird von der Tochter eines Landadeligen eingeladen, einige Som- merwochen auf dem Landschloss ihres Vaters zu verbringen. Der durch keine moralischen Skrupel behinderte junge Mann nimmt die Einladung in der sich nur vage eingestandenen Hoff- nung an, dass sie ihm vielleicht den Aufstieg in die englische Oberschicht ermöglicht. Während seines Aufenthalts dort — der als Hintergrund für die Beschreibung der Verschrobenheit, geistigen Leere, Heuchelei, Oberflächlichkeit und des Hochmuts der gehoben Kreise in der englischen Pro- vinz dient — spielt er selbst seine eigene moralische und sexuelle Bedenkenlosigkeit aus, sieht sich aber bald mit schlimmen Konsequenzen einem anderen „Übermenschen“ gegenüber. — Der Roman kann sehr wohl als Gegenstück zu „Downton Abbey“ gelesen werden. Mit der Übersetzung des Romans „Tod am Morgen“ („From a View to a Death“, 1933), setzen wir die Publikation von Anthony Powells Erzählwerk fort.
