August Macke. 1922 schrieb der Kunsthistoriker Walter Cohen in einem Band von „Junge Kunst“, dass Macke der Benjamin des Kreises „Der Blaue Reiter“ war und dass er wegen seines wahrhaft jugendlichen Charakters besonders beliebt war. Im Alter von 23 Jahren hatte August Macke 1910 Franz Marc getroffen und war durch ihn mit der Künstlergruppe „Der Blaue Reiter“ vertraut geworden. Nach gemeinsamen Ausstellungen in den Jahren 1911 und 1912 konzentrierte sich Macke auf seine eigene Bildsprache. Die Aquarelle, die er während der legendären Reise nach Tunis mit Paul Klee und Louis Moilliet malte, waren für ihn von besonderer Bedeutung. Leider hatte August Macke nur wenige Monate Zeit, um die neuen Erkenntnisse in seine Kompositionen einzuarbeiten, da er am 26. September 1914 in Frankreich während der ersten Wochen des Ersten Weltkriegs starb.
