Němci vlivem rasistických teorií postoupili dále, nežli jakýkoli antisemitismus v dějinách: takřka celý národ přijal za své myšlenku o zrůdnosti židovské rasy, její méněcennosti, o škodlivosti Židů na lidstvo, Německo však především. Goldhagen dokazuje, že eliminační antisemitismus se stal všeobecně přijímanou ideologií už v době, kdy se nacisté teprve dostali k moci. Ačkoli se německá společnost neshodovala zcela v návrzích, jakými metodami řešit "židovskou otázku", v zásadě se všichni shodovali na skutečnosti, že má-li Německo přežít, je třeba vliv a působení Židů v Německu zcela eliminovat.

Is dit op zich al een kwestieuze, want eenzijdige keuze, als historicus begeeft hij zich met deze ethische en theologische uitstapjes op glad ijs. Het geheel is te simplistisch om aan te kunnen bevelen. Ten eerste is het boek slecht geschreven. Het betoog slingert heen en weer tussen theorie en geschiedenis en het model wordt niet uitgewerkt. Ten tweede is het bewijs een aaneenrijging van reeds bekende, maar willekeurig gekozen feiten die niet in een context komen; tegenvoorbeelden worden niet serieus behandeld. Als de auteur aan het eind van de kerk eist dat ze de Bijbel herschrijft, maakt hij zich zelfs belachelijk.
