Shere Hite byla průkopnicí v oblasti sexuální výchovy a feministka, jejíž práce se soustředila na ženskou sexualitu. Na rozdíl od dřívějších studií se Hite zaměřila na osobní vnímání a význam sexuálních zkušeností. Její výzkum ukázal, že mnoho žen nedosahuje orgasmu prostřednictvím běžného pohlavního styku, ale spíše jinými formami stimulace. Hite kritizovala předchozí sexuální výzkum za nezohlednění kulturních postojů a zdůraznila potřebu porozumět individuálním a společenským aspektům sexuality, aby byl výzkum relevantní pro skutečné sexuální chování.
