Jméno hlavní hrdinky tohoto grafického románu, Gemma Boveryová, připomíná ne náhodou jméno hlavní hrdinky klasického románu Gustava Flauberta, který se stejně jako tento odehrává ve Francii. Paní Bovaryová, kterou Flaubert napsal v roce 1856, je výjimečnou a nadčasovou sondou do psychologie postav, a to zejména hlavní hrdinky Emmy Bovaryové, v níž by se jistě našla nejedna dnešní žena, tedy odmyslíme-li si tragický konec tohoto slavného příběhu. Gemma Boveryová, kterou stvořila britská ilustrátorka Rosemary Elizabeth „Posy“ Simmondsová, má s Emmou Bovaryovou velmi mnoho společných rysů: překvapivě podobnou povahu, typicky ženské nálady, ale zároveň umí zamotat hlavu mužům i sama sobě. Posy Simmondsová však Gemmu nevytvořila pouze „podle vzoru“ slavné Emmy – stejně jako Flaubert ve svém příběhu, kritizuje i Simmondsová nešvary dnešní doby, především anglickou středostavovstkou vrstvu obyvatel. Nicméně na rozdíl od Flauberta nevolí tragickou, nýbrž humornou formu, takže se při čtení jejího originálního „komiksu“ člověk výborně baví. Posy Simmondsová ve svém díle upozorňuje na některá aktuální témata dnešní doby, jako je utíkání z města na venkov nebo konzumní styl života. Velmi vtipně rovněž popisuje kulturní rozdíly mezi Angličany a Francouzy, tedy téma vzájemné konfrontace, s čímž se v současné otevřené Evropě setkáváme stále častěji.
