Román Hello, Ameriko! je napínavým záznamem dobrodružného putování výzkumné evropské výpravy napříč americkým kontinentem po globální klimatické změně, při níž se větší část Spojených států změnila v neobyvatelnou poušť. Nejedná se však „jen" o futuristické sci-fi či utopickou vizi – jak upozorňuje v doslovu ke knize filosof Miroslav Petříček, všechny Ballardovy romány lze označit za sňatek rozumu s noční můrou. Obdobně výstižnou charakteristiku své tvorby nabízí ovšem Ballard sám, když mluví o svém psaní jako o setkání vědy a pornografie na pitevním stole: způsob, jímž proniká pod povrch, je skutečně chirurgicky přesný a nemilosrdný, ale právě proto je často až nesnesitelně blízko traumatům současného světa. Román Hello, Ameriko! je toho – přes všechnu svou (anti)utopičnost – nejlepším důkazem.
