Na osudech mnoha postav, avšak zejména mladého agenta Skipa Sandse, jenž ve stopách svého obdivovaného strýce, hrdiny 2. světové války a mocného plukovníka CIA, nastupuje k výzvědné službě, se promítají válečné události a místa, ovšem způsobem, v němž se odráží autorův básnický talent a ambice. Sandsova postava a oddělení psychologických operací CIA povětšinou provází čtenáře zákrutami mystifikací, válečných hrůz i hypnotizujících epizod po rozsáhlé scéně románu.
