Scény popisující nekrofilii, kanibalismus, lesbickou erotiku či mrtvoly po bitvě nejsou podány vulgárně, ale správně zvolenými slovy navozují hutnou atmosféru, kterou místy odlehčí autorův smysl pro černý humor. V celém Bullingtonově díle jsou patrné aluze na evropské reálie a inspirace jinými literárními mistry. Jak sám autor přiznává, miluje Umberta Eca a ke knihám Franze Kafky se vždy s oblibou vrací.

Píše se rok 1364. Středověkou Evropu sužuje mor, po cestách táhnou sebemrskačská procesí a temnými lesy se kradou hladové stvůry. Dvojčata Hegel a Manfried Grossbartovi, hrdí pokračovatelé rodinného řemesla vykrádání hrobů, však patří mezi vyvolené. Jsou zruční, zcestovalí a mají pro strach uděláno. Nesnášejí kacíře, zakládají si na své neposkvrněnosti a ochrannou ruku nad nimi drží sama Panenka Marie. Bezohlední bratři se ve snaze trumfnout své předky vydávají vykrást ty nejvelkolepější hrobky ze všech – pyramidy egyptských faraonů. Cestou potkávají šílené kněze, vilné čarodějnice i morové démony. Jesse Bullington s bezbřehou imaginací a humornou nadsázkou sobě vlastní předkládá svoji verzi dochovaného příběhu středověkých sériových vrahů. Noir román plný naturalistických scén rozhodně není určen pro čtenáře slabší povahy.
