Britský umělec a ilustrátor Alan Marks se narodil v Londýně v roce 1957. Po studiích umění a krátkém působení jako pedagog se etabloval v oblasti ilustrace časopisů a knih. Jeho charakteristický styl obohatil díla mnoha dětských autorů, včetně známých jmen v oboru. Marks je ceněn pro svůj umělecký přínos a cit pro vizuální vyprávění.

David Copperfield, souvent considéré comme le chef-d'œuvre de Charles Dickens (1812-1870), était en tout cas celui de ses quinze romans que préférait l'auteur : il y avait mis beaucoup de lui-même. Le texte intégral de ce roman foisonnant, aussi riche en humour qu'en émotion, en aventures qu'en vérité psychologique, occupe un millier de pages. Pour se faire une idée de sa qualité exceptionnelle, il est légitime de commencer par une version abrégée. Par bonheur il en existe une que Dickens avait lui-même établie en 1861, afin d'introduire David Copperfield dans le répertoire de ses lectures publiques d'extraits de ses œuvres : d'une part, l'enlèvement d'Emily par un ami de David et les conséquences tragiques de cet enlèvement ; d'autre part, l'amour et le mariage de David et Dora ; Dickens a puisé des éléments dans d'autres chapitres pour donner un aperçu plus représentatif de son vaste travail. Le travail ardu de condensation a été habilement mené. La lecture durait deux heures ; elle devint la favorite de Dickens qui la donna soixante et onze fois dans la dernière décennie de sa vie.
