Benediktinský opat Johannes Trithemius (1462-1516) je autorem spisů věnovaných mystické teologii a historiografii, ironií osudu se však zapsal do dějin jako kontroverzní postava, o níž kolovaly legendy podobné těm o jeho současníkovi doktoru Faustovi. Jeho spis „De septem secundeis“ představuje na svou dobu výjimečný pokus vtisknout dějinám cyklickou formu a zaslechnout v nich rytmickou pulzaci božského Logu, artikulovaného prostřednictvím „druhotných příčin“ andělských hierarchií.
