Jack Rozparovač je podezřelý, že ve špinavých uličkách chudinské čtvrti Whitechapel na východě Londýna (East End) v průběhu několika týdnů roku 1888 zavraždil 5 prostitutek. První zavraděnou byla Mary Ann Nicholsonová. Bylo ji 42 let a byla známá pod jménem Polly. Své zákazníky si vodila do noclehárny, kde postel stála jednu penci na hodinu. Byla nalezena v kaluži krve před jednou z barabizen na Buck's Row. Vrah jí uřízl hlavu a rozpáral nožem břicho. Stejným brutálním způsobem rozpáral další tři prostitutky. V roce 1991 byl v domku na londýnském předměstí nalezen deník údajně Jacka Rozparovače. Jako autor byl identifikován James Maybrick. Celkem 12 znalců podrobilo deník o 65 stranách rozsáhlým expertízám. Část znalců došla k názoru, že sice nelze jednoznačně potvrdit jeho pravost, ale také není možné deník označit za padělek.
