Krátký příběh o malém nemocném chlapci, jehož může zachránit snad už jen modlitba moudrého starce. Michail, syn ševce Jakova, je velice nemocný. Jakov s manželkou už jsou téměř bezradní a pomalu se smiřují s tím, že chlapec zemře. Ještě však zbývá malá naděje. Na kraji městečka žije stařec, o němž se vypráví, že rozmlouvá s anděly a dokáže dělat zázraky. Jakov se za ním vypraví a poprosí ho o pomoc. Ani starcova modlitba však nedokáže otevřít nebeskou bránu, a tak si stařec pozve domů sedm nejprohnilejších lotrů, které přiměje k tomu, aby se s ním pomodlili za Michailovo uzdravení.
