V popisech italského tažení je naturalistický a nabízí rafinované podobenství o tom, jak nacismus a komunismus devastují lidské osudy. She faces the struggles of the working class and develops a complex relationship with John Thornton, a mill owner. The novel explores love amidst harsh realities of 19th-century life.
